Teresa Butler grew up in Napa Valley. When she was a little girl, she would often drive past the old Victorian called Buhman Ranch in Brown’s Valley. She didn’t recall it for the charm. She remembered her family exclaiming over the buffalo in the barn and pasture, and the rumors of the five-legged cow.
Times change. The buffalo are gone. An under-20 unit home development, Buhman Court, was built up on the old grounds. And Teresa married her husband, William Butler, and lived with him on a ranch on Diamond Mountain.
But William is a veteran Vietnam War fighter pilot, a 5½-year prisoner of war who survived the crash that made him a captive with wounds that would linger past his years as a veterinarian and into his old age. His body has been breaking down, and they couldn’t handle the 50-acre ranch anymore. They downsized to Buhman Ranch. Now, for the same reason, they can’t stay in the two-floor Victorian.
"He’s had seven major surgeries in seven years," Teresa Butler said. "This guy needs to be not walking up and down any more."
That’s a shame, because they love the house.
"They re-did the house, gutted it, but kept all the old charm like the wainscoting … And this house was rock-solidly built," Teresa said.
It backs up to hilly open space and features all the Victorian trimmings, from the formal entry to the moldings. But it also has a modern pair of kitchens with stainless steel appliances. The Butlers added an outdoor spa and a pool with a waterfall.
The neighbors are also wonderful, Teresa said, hosting porch parties and pot lucks with food and fine wines.
