Holiday Angels: Ellen Newman

Holiday Angels The Examiner celebrates people who made a difference in 2006

Occupation: Marketing strategist

Residence: San Francisco

What she does: Newman has been promoting Project Homeless Connect, a nonprofit initiated by Mayor Gavin Newsom in San Francisco in October 2004 that has since spread across the nation. Project Homeless Connect provides the homeless services such as health, housing and substance abuse programs, and Newman advocates the organization’s principles in the business and social community, playing a role in helping engage San Francisco residents in the homelessness issue.

Why she does it: "I read about Project Homeless Connect and was immediately drawn to the integrity and sensitivity of the program," Newman said. "They really had a tenderness and respect for the homeless. It was clear that they really cared deeply about the people they were helping."

The impact: "Ellen has been very visible promoting our cause," Project Homeless Connect Development Director Ed Dimasi said. "She has taken this organization under her wing, and has been a great ambassador to the community on part of Project Homeless Connect."
