History worth celebrating: 10 years since Winter of Love started same-sex marriage legalization journey
San Francisco on Wednesday celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the Winter of Love, when former Mayor Gavin Newsom ordered the County Clerk’s Office to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Though the effort was short-lived, it eventually led to the legalization of same-sex marriage in California.
Phyllis Lyon, along with Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, helped celebrate the 10th anniversary of San Francisco’s first same-sex marriages during a ceremony at City Hall on Wednesday. Lyon married Del Martin on Feb. 12, 2004, in the first marriage after Newsom, then San Francisco’s mayor, gave the order for the Winter of Love to commence. Martin died in 2008.
