In the works for two years, the proposal to change part of Hayes Street into a two-way thoroughfare could finally be approved today.
Since the 1950s, the stretch of Hayes Street between Gough and Franklin streets has been one-way, a setup designed to move cars between Ninth and 10th streets and Fell and Oak streets.
With Hayes Valley becoming more of a neighborhood commercial district, planners want to slow down traffic flow and make that section of Hayes Street two-way. Today, the Municipal Transportation Agency’s Board of Directors could approve that proposal.
If approved, some bus zones along the 21-Hayes route would be changed, and some on-street parking spaces would be lost. However, the lost parking spaces would be offset by the removal of a tow-away zone, which would free up 46 spots.
