One person was arrested and seven others detained after firing at an unmarked San Francisco police car near India Basin early Tuesday morning, police Officer Albie Esparza said.

Leafaitulagi Ioani, 18, of San Francisco, was arrested on suspicion of driving without a license and evading police after she and two other cars sped off after firing at the squad car, Esparza said.

The officers were patrolling in the area of India Basin Shoreline Park near Hunters Point Boulevard and Evans Avenue about 12:50 a.m. when they saw three vehicles with numerous people hanging out in the park.

The officers were on their way out of the park when someone from the gathering fired at the officers’ vehicle hitting it numerous times, police said. The three vehicles in the park then fled in different directions.

Police pursued the most reckless vehicle, a white Chevy Suburban, to 9th and Bryant streets where they detained the eight occupants of the vehicle, Esparza said.

Two weapons were recovered during the incident, Esparza said, and one handgun was found at the scene of the shooting and the other on Evans Avenue. Crime scene investigators will be conducting ballistics test to determine if the guns were used in the shooting.

No weapons were found on any of those detained.

The officers were not injured in this brazen attack and did not fire any shots of their own, police said.
