Goons try to rob home fire victims

Residents of a Bayview house where a fire broke out last week were nearly burned twice, police said, when two heartless burglars posing as victims tried to steal their belongings.

Juan Rangel, 36, and Deshari Herrera, 29, both of San Francisco, were booked on numerous charges after allegedly draping themselves in Red Cross blankets and entering a fire-ravaged home in the 1800 block of Oakdale Avenue on March 4.

After the fire was put out about 1 a.m., tenants were allowed back into their units. Rangel and Herrera were found in a common area wearing stolen backpacks filled with loot, police said.

The pair insisted they lived on the property. When that didn’t work, they fled. But with help from tenants, police said, the suspects were eventually arrested.
