Global Warming shocker! Climategate scientist admits no warming since 1995 UPDATED: Or did he?

Professor Phil Jones of Britain's University of East Anglia has admitted in an interview with the BBC that there has been no statistically significant warming in the earth's atmospheric temperatures since 1995, according to London's Daily Mail.

Professor Phil Jones of Britain's University of East Anglia has admitted in an interview with the BBC that there has been no statistically significant warming in the earth's atmospheric temperatures since 1995, according to London's Daily Mail.

"Professor Jones also conceded the possibility that the world was warmer in medieval times than now – suggesting global warming may not be a man-made phenomenon. And he said that for the past 15 years there has been no ‘statistically significant’ warming.

"The admissions will be seized on by sceptics as fresh evidence that there are serious flaws at the heart of the science of climate change and the orthodoxy that recent rises in temperature are largely man-made.

"Professor Jones has been in the spotlight since he stepped down as director of the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit after the leaking of emails that sceptics claim show scientists were manipulating data.

"The raw data, collected from hundreds of weather stations around the world and analysed by his unit, has been used for years to bolster efforts by the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to press governments to cut carbon dioxide emissions." the Mail said.

Jones also conceded that his record-keeping skills are in doubt, which the Mail said, is why some of his colleagues have speculated that the reason he has refused to fulfill Freedom of Information Act requests for the data is because he has lost it.

UPDATED: Did he say no warming since 95?

Here's the BBC story on the interview with Jones and there is no reference in it to his saying there has been no warming since 1995, as reported by the Daily Mail. The statements about the Mediavel warming are accurately reported by the Mail.

But here is the text of the BBC interview from which the Daily Mail drew its statement about no warming since 1995. The first question concerns similar temperatures for three periods since 1860, and the second question is specifically about the period since 1995:

"B - Do you agree that from 1995 to the present there has been no statistically-significant global warming

"Yes, but only just. I also calculated the trend for the period 1995 to 2009. This trend (0.12C per decade) is positive, but not significant at the 95% significance level. The positive trend is quite close to the significance level. Achieving statistical significance in scientific terms is much more likely for longer periods, and much less likely for shorter periods."

Several questions later, Jones was asked by the BBC interviewer about his confidence that global warming has in fact occurred and that human activities are the case. Here is his response:

"I'm 100% confident that the climate has warmed. As to the second question, I would go along with IPCC Chapter 9 - there's evidence that most of the warming since the 1950s is due to human activity."

Note that, while Jones still affirms warming, he carefully qualifies the role of human activities - saying there is evidence, but not making a clear assertion, as he did to the temperature increase.
