San Francisco's Glide Memorial Church is partnering with two San Francisco Safeway supermarkets today to collect donations of groceries and turkeys to help feed hungry families this holiday season.
Glide community members will be stationed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front stores located in San Francisco's Marina and Castro districts, located at 15 Marina Blvd. and 2020 Market St., respectively.
The church hopes to receive at least 1,000 donated turkeys to supplement its holiday meals program, according to Glide officials.
The "Help Us End Hunger" food drive, sponsored by Safeway Inc., was launched Wednesday and runs through Christmas Eve.
Stores will be selling a specially produced shopping bag filled with items food banks often need the most. The $10 bag includes rice, pasta, canned vegetables, tuna, and cranberry sauce, among other foodstuffs.
Members of the Safeway customer rewards program who spend at least $25 at participating San Francisco stores will also be eligible to purchase turkeys at a discounted price.
"We are grateful to Safeway for providing a perfect opportunity for their customers to help the thousands of people that depend on Glide every day," Glide's founder the Rev. Cecil Williams said in a statement today.
Mike Kim, chair of Glide's Legacy Committee, which will be out in force at the stores today, said that the donations will be especially important this year.
"More than ever, the need to give back and feed our community is at an all time high," Kim said.
Williams and Glide's Founding President Janice Mirikitani are expected to meet shoppers at the Castro Safeway store at 11:30 a.m.
"Safeway customers should feel good knowing that the donated food and turkeys will be enjoyed by thousands this holiday season," Mirikitani said in a statement issued this morning.
