Giants right-hander Ryan Vogelsong, sidelined since breaking the pinkie finger on his right hand May 20, played catch on Monday for the first time since having surgery.
Vogelsong threw for about five minutes to trainer Dave Groeschner before the Giants' game against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark.
"This is a good step for me," Vogelsong said. "It felt good. There was nothing in my hand. The ball felt good when it was coming out of my hand. Everything went well. There's a little weakness, but that's to be expected."
Vogelsong had the splint on his injured finger removed last week and had been looking forward to throwing for the first time.
There is no exact timetable for his return.
