Giants minor leaguer gets 50-game drug penalty

A minor leaguer in the Giants’ organization has been given a 50-game drug ban after testing positive for an amphetamine.

Second baseman Ryan Jones was penalized Thursday by the commissioner’s office.

The 23-year-old Jones is on the roster of Class A Augusta in the South Atlantic League. He hit .336 last season in 42 games in the Class A Northwest League. Jones was a 12th-round pick out of Michigan State in the 2012 draft.

There have been 17 suspensions this year under the minor league program.
