As the baseball draft wound down Wednesday with rounds 16 through 40, the Giants selected a pair of College of San Mateo pitchers in back-to-back rounds. Stanford had two players drafted on the final day, as catcher Eric Smith went to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 18th round and Tyler Gaffney, also a football player, joined teammate Mark Appel as a Pittsburgh Pirates draftee in the 24th round.
Jordan Remer was the lone USF player taken on the final day, as the Cincinnati Reds scooped him up in the 21st round.
Five Cal players became property of big-league clubs, as third baseman Mitchell Delfino (20th round, Giants), left-hander Justin Jones (26th round, Minnesota Twins), right-hander Matthew Flemer (27th round, Colorado Rockies), Daniel Oh (27th round, New York Yankees) and right-hander Joseph Donofrio (31st round, St. Louis Cardinals) all were drafted.
Menlo School right-hander Freddy Avis was chosen by the Washington Nationals in the 25th round, though he’s expected to honor his commitment to Stanford next season.
