Sure, the hype machine screams for new rock star DJ gods Deadmou5 and Skrillex, but the fact of the matter is: Electronic dance music, as a genre, is no spring chicken.
At the genre’s birth in the late 1970s and early ’80s, the first DJs were perhaps 20, making them roughly 52 about now. While a new generation of raver kids may be discovering four-four beats, seasoned scenesters now take their toddlers to “baby disco” parties on weekend afternoons.
Fitting right in is the “Get Set” happy hour Friday at 222 Hyde in San Francisco’s Tenderloin. The free, weekly event offers chill downtempo, nu disco, deep house and funk at the sensible, adult time of 7 to 10 p.m. For many in their mid-to-late-20s to mid-30s, the idea of catching a 2 a.m. DJ set has become rather grim. “Get Set” draws such professionals, says Maxwell Dub, a 25-year-old Berkeley resident and one of two resident “Get Set” DJs.
“People are just relaxing after work,” he says. “It’s not such a high-pressure club environment. It’s just for people who want to hear some good music.”
Dub grew up in Chicago and Boston, working at a record store, before doing A&R and starting his own mastering company. He moved to the Bay Area in 2011, and now works day jobs as a sound engineer at Temple nightclub as well as 1015 Folsom and Ruby Skye.
“It was probably the best decision of my life,” he says. “I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.”
Answering a 222 Hyde gig opening on Craigslist, Dub and buddy Nick Doyle started “Get Set” in September to satisfy their desire to play super-eclectic 90-minute sets accompanied by a happy hour.
Attendance has been up and down, meaning no obnoxious lines.
The club has low, LED-laced ceilings, a killer sound system, and an $8 pizza and beer special, Dub says, adding, “222 Hyde is probably one of my favorite venues in San Francisco. It caters to people who really love music and just want to have the best possible experience with sound quality, while having everything be really down to earth.”
