Get on board with The Belle Brigade

What creative outlet do you pursue when your father is noted songwriter Jay Gruska and your grandfather happens to be legendary film composer John Williams?

Why, percussion, of course!

Or at least that’s how Barbara Gruska saw it, when she first constructed a pan-lid drum kit in her room at age nine. Once she studied jazz drumming at Oberlin and Cal Arts, she hit the professional trail, slapping skins for Jenny Lewis and Inara George’s The Bird And The Bee.

But now she’s stepped into the singing/strumming spotlight with her guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist kid brother as the great new folk-pop duo The Belle Brigade, who open for G. Love And Special Sauce at The Fillmore this Sunday.

The band’s eponymous debut is loaded with kinetic potential hits like “Sweet Louise” and “Belt Of Orion,” and is eerily reminiscent of the inventive debut from Buckingham Nicks — an album so good it landed Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham a steady gig with Fleetwood Mac.

Naturally, Fleetwood Mac was a crucial influence on the Gruskas, whose familial harmonies have an Everlys-tight ring to them. They’re already hometown heroes in Los Angeles — KCRW has pounced them, and the L.A. Times has picked them as Faces To Watch this year.
