Saturday is going to be a memorable one for those associated with Galileo High School.
The school located near Fisherman’s Wharf is hosting Berean Christian (Walnut Creek) in football at 1 p.m., but that’s just the appetizer to a full day of celebration.
Galileo is celebrating its 90th anniversary by unveiling the Galileo Sports Hall of Fame and the new Hall of Merit.
“There is excitement by the student body, alumni, PTSA and faculty [for this event],” Galileo Associated Student Body Advisor Eugene Wing said.
The Galileo Sports Hall of Fame will have 252 inductees, and some very high-profile names to boot.
New York Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio and his brother Dom DiMaggio headline the list. Also included will be 1948 Olympic gold medal winners Ann Curtis Cuneo and Patty Elsner Homan, former Cal All-American wide receiver Bobby Shaw, and former A’s owner Walter Haas Jr.
It’s a mystery as to who will be present from the past, but Wing is expecting “around 1,000 people” to be in attendance.
“[We] will not know who will show up for the Hall of Fame until this Saturday,” Wing said. “[However], it’ll be a great day to show out school pride.”
