His family is hosting a rosary service tomorrow, May 1, at 7 p.m., also at Saints Peter and Paul Church.
Legnitto, who was born and raised in Marin and well-known in San Francisco, chaired the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce and Leadership San Francisco, and served on the board of Clinic by the Bay.
He began working at Recology in 1994 and was promoted to vice president and group manager of the San Francisco region in 2001. He was instrumental in the resource recovery system, which diverts 78 percent of San Francisco's waste away from landfills, instead reusing or recycling it. San Francisco has the highest rate of resource recovery of any city in the nation. Legnitto received the Special Achievement Award in Environmental Citizenship from the National Italian American Foundation for his efforts in resource recovery.
Legnitto is survived by his wife of 33 years, Irene, and his children, David, Barbara and John.
