Former Pacifica teacher gets five years for child porn

A former Spanish teacher at a Pacifica high school was sentenced to five years in federal prison Friday for receiving child pornography.
Carlos Araiza, 44, who taught at Terra Nova High School since 2000, pleaded guilty in June to one count of receiving child pornography in January 2005, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Five years imprisonment is the minimum mandatory sentence for the statute, officials said.

Araiza lost his job in April following an investigation by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Pacifica Police Department. Parents, neighbors and friends said they were shocked to find out the teacher, who was also active in the Latino music community, had been involved in the illegal trade.

At Terra Nova, Araiza was in charge of several groups, including Latino, Middle Eastern and tennis clubs. Jefferson Union High School District Superintendent Mike Crilly has said that the case against Araiza was not connected to the school.
