King misses out on Frick Award: Bay Area broadcasting icon Bill King came up short once again in his bid to win the Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in baseball broadcasting. The award went to Texas Rangers announcer Eric Nadel, who has been with the team for 35 years. Nadel will be honored during the Hall of Fame awards presentation July 26 in Cooperstown, N.Y. King was the A’s play-by-play man from 1981 to 2005 and was behind the mic for many historic Bay Area sports moments as he also served as the voice of the Warriors and Raiders for years.
Mariners add some pop: The Seattle Mariners added a pair of slugging first baseman-outfielders to go along with Robinson Cano, reaching agreement on a one-year deal with Corey Hart and acquiring Logan Morrison in a trade with the Miami Marlins. Hart’s deal is reportedly worth $6 million guaranteed but can be worth up to $13 million if he hits certain incentives. Morrison was acquired for relief pitcher Carter Capps.
Memoribilia sale: The Giants are putting authenticated game-used items and memorabilia from the 2013 season and past seasons on sale Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Field Club Lounge at AT&T Park.
Astros trade for Bass: Right-hander Anthony Bass was acquired by the Houston Astros from the San Diego Padres for a player to be named or cash.
