Announced Tuesday by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, the $253,000 pilot program will include green pavement in sections approaching intersections and at the beginning of intersections to minimize the numbers of motorist driving on the bicycle lane.
The pilot originated from an SFMTA study in December 2011 examining the transportation-network needs in neighborhoods on the eastern side of The City. Its approval comes a month and a half after a truck driver struck and killed a 24-year-old woman on Folsom and 6th streets.
“Even though work on this proposal had been in place for some time, the accident was one of the catalysts for making it a priority now,” SFMTA spokesman Paul Rose said.
The buffer will be painted by the end of the year and officials plan to make appropriate changes based on community feedback.
Folsom Street is The City’s sixth-busiest bike route and the buffer addresses a longtime need in the area, according to San Francisco Bicycle Coalition spokeswoman Kristin Smith.
“We hope this is the beginning of even more attention to taming SoMa’s high-speed streets,” she said.
