Several flights are scheduled between San Francisco International Airport and Europe on Tuesday as European airspaces reopen, an airport spokesman said.
Flights will leave for and arrive from Munich and Frankfurt, and an incoming flight is scheduled to arrive from Amsterdam, airport spokesman Mike McCarron said.
An Air France flight was supposed to arrive from Paris this afternoon but had to turn around just after departure due to mechanical
problems. McCarron said the airline was planning to reschedule the flight.
Travel between Europe and the U.S. was crippled Thursday when a volcanic eruption in Iceland sent giant plumes of ash into the sky over northern Europe.
Although flights are slowly being rescheduled, thousands of travelers remained stranded Tuesday.
