The towering centerpiece of the Bay Bridge’s self-anchored suspension span will grow ever higher starting Friday.
Construction crews will set the fifth piece of the SAS central tower, bringing the height of the edifice up to 495 feet. Following the last project, which starts at 10 a.m. on Friday, there will be just one piece left to put in place for the completion of the 525-foot tower.
In February, crews set the fourth piece of the tower, bringing it to its current height of 480 feet.
The $6.2 billion rehab and rebuild of the Bay Bridge is slated to be completed in 2013.
