Federal government sues Cosco Busan owner, pilot

The federal government is taking legal action against the owners of the Cosco Busan and the pilot who was at the helm when it struck a bridge support in San Francisco Bay.

The Justice Department filed a lawsuit in federal court in San Francisco on Friday. It names Regal Stone Limited, which owns the Cosco Busan; its insurance company; and pilot John Cota.

The lawsuit seeks damages for money the government has spent and will spend cleaning up the 58,000 gallons of bunker fuel that the ship discharged when it struck a bridge support on Nov. 7.

The suit says the amount of damages would be determined at a trial.
