Fatal Muni crash ruled a suicide

Police determined Sunday that a man who was hit and killed by a 49-Van Ness Muni bus in a high-traffic intersection Saturday evening deliberately flung himself in the bus’ path.

Witnesses said San Francisco resident Stanley Madsen, 43, around 6:20 p.m. jumped in front of the bus that was traveling toward the Mission District on South Van Ness Avenue near Market Street, according to police.

The crash was hours after an 8X-Bayshore Express bus at Stockton and Clay streets rolled backwards into a 30-Stockton bus and then a pole, sending two passengers on the 8X to the hospital with minor injuries.

The woman who was driving told officials she put the parking break on and left her coach to check on the wheelchair ramp on the bus that refused to lift up, Muni spokesman Paul Rose said.

Both drivers were tested for drugs and alcohol and taken off driving status per usual protocol.
