Exene enjoys holiday season

It’s becoming a wonderful little tradition for punk/rockabilly locals — the annual Yuletide shows showered on San Francisco by legendary L.A. quartet X, still performing in its original late-1970s lineup of guitarist Billy Zoom, drummer D.J. Bonebrake, bassist/vocalist John Doe and co-vocalist Exene Cervenka. This year, there’s an added bonus: “Merry Xmas,” a new iTunes single featuring the band’s revved-up takes on “Jingle Bells” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” Cervenka — who sleigh-rides X into Slim’s next week — offers her thoughts on the season.

So where do you usually find yourself on New Year’s Eve? In an elevator at the stroke of midnight one year, on the way to a party. It was terrible. Or sometimes in a car, on the way to a party. It seems like I just miss it sometimes. But this year I’m excited because we’re playing — it’s been a long time since we actually played on New Year’s Eve, so this year it’s going to be fun.

What was your worst — and then best — New Year’s ever? Well, I can’t think of a bad one. But to tell you the truth, being stuck in that elevator is a really good memory, because I was with my sister, who died the next year, and we were laughing really hard because we were counting down to midnight on our watches. In an elevator! And it was really exciting, because we were in New York City going to this big loft party, and there were going to be all these amazing people there. And I love Christmas, by the way — I love being with people for the holidays.

Do you love snow, too? No! It’s not cool — snow sucks. And I grew up in the snow, back in Illinois, so I know snow.

Any Christmas rituals? I always have a Christmas tree, no matter where I am. And I prefer a living one. I always decorated the tree when I was little, so I use vintage ornaments with lots of lights and tinsel. And I keep it a week into January, but if I had a silver tree, I’d keep it up longer. So I might break with tradition this year and get a silver tree.

Do you cook for the holidays? Yes. But I’m a vegetarian now, so we’ll see. I have a roommate, my friend Angela, and she’s a really amazing cook, so we’re going to have big holiday parties this year and cook a lot. Yes, I know all about tofurkey. And it’s actually quite good!
