Jenn Bacha wasn’t too happy being woken at 5:30 in the morning Tuesday by Matt Warneke for their morning jog.
What Bacha, 34, didn’t know is that Warneke, her boyfriend of three years, had an engagement ring in his pocket throughout the run.
“I started thinking about a creative way to propose to her,” said Warneke, 26, an advertising executive at The San Francisco Examiner.
Warneke’s six-month proposal plan became a reality Tuesday as he and Bacha grabbed coffee after their run at the Marina Starbucks and picked up a copy of The Examiner.
Warneke told her that he had helped with the layout in the entertainment section and wanted her feedback. They flipped to page 23, and first reaction was, “Jennifer Hudson looks awesome!”
And then she saw it.
“Dear Jenn, I love you with all my heart. Will you marry me? You are the joy of my life. Love, Matt,” read the ad at the bottom of the page.
“I cried,” Bacha said. “I was speechless.”
Warneke’s paid ad proposal came a day after Valentine’s Day for a reason. Bacha had a “no Valentine’s Day” rule, while Warneke said he also didn’t want to propose on the most cliché day of the year.
Warneke bought a second ad in today’s Examiner to reveal Bacha’s answer. Check page 16 of our E-dition for the story's conclusion.
(Spoiler alert for those who can't wait: She said yes!)
