The notoriously unreliable escalators at Muni’s transit stations will be getting replaced this week as part of a yearlong project.
The $7.3 million project will replace moving stairs at three stations, starting first with the escalators at the north side of Church Street Station. Replacement work at that station will last until March, at which time crews will begin installing new escalators at the Hallidie Plaza at the Powell Street Station. Van Ness Station will be the last site for the project, with replacement work starting there in August.
In total, five escalators will be replaced, with each one being down for about three months as part of the work. The project is funded through revenue from Proposition K, a local sales tax initiative that provides support for transportation infrastructure projects.
