Eleven San Francisco high schools are part of the Northern California bracket of the CIF State Basketball Championships, though none were selected to compete in the newly formed and controversial Open Division.
The CIF unveiled brackets on Sunday and the Sacred Heart Cathedral boys and girls were both handsomely rewarded.
The boys garnered NorCal’s top seed in Division III, earned a first-round bye and will host the winner of San Marin (Novato) and Casa Roble (Orangevale) on Saturday.
The Irish girls were also the top seed in Division III and await the winner of Branham (San Jose) and Kennedy (Richmond) this weekend. The St. Ignatius girls are in the same bracket as SHC and were given the No. 2 seed, setting up a possible SHC-SI showdown for the NorCal crown. The Wildcats also have a first-round bye and will meet either Encinal (Alameda) or Vanden (Fairfield).
Other city girls’ teams in the tournament include Galileo and Lowell in Division I and Urban and International in Division V.
Lowell, fresh off its seventh Academic Athletic Association title, hosts Oakland Tech on Wednesday, while Galileo travels to Palo Alto to face Gunn on Wednesday.
Urban and International will have home games Wednesday, with the Blues taking on Captial Christian (Sacramento) and the Jaguars facing Weed.
One of the biggest beneficiaries of the new Open Division is the Riordan boys. The Crusaders won’t have to face a loaded Salesian team, which drew the top seed in the Open Division, down the road in Division IV. Riordan earned the No. 2 seed in D-IV and hosts the Half Moon Bay-Liberty Ranch (Galt) winner on Saturday.
The University boys earned a first-round bye in Division V and will take on the winner of Central Catholic (Modesto) and Alma Heights (Pacifica).
Finally, both boys participants in the AAA championship will compete in NorCals. Lincoln has its hands full in Division I with a road game against Bellarmine in the first round, while Mission, riding high off its triple-overtime win to claim the city title, matches up against Weston Ranch (Stockton) in D-III action.
