WHAT: This summer’s big East Coast earthquake delivered more shaking than at least 27 U.S. nuclear plants were engineered to resist. A preliminary Nuclear Regulatory Commission review called the risk 24 times greater at one nuclear site.

WHAT’S HAPPENING NEXT: Seismic upgrades will be required for each of America’s 104 reactors identified in an ongoing geological reassessment as being in danger of earthquakes larger than previously planned for.

WHY IT’S OUTRAGEOUS: This new review will be the first complete update in years on the seismic safety of the nation’s existing reactors, despite research showing greater quake hazards than had been realized.
