Downtown bounty at Manor West’s ‘Fortune Friday’

  • DJ Solarz expects a wild, twerk-happy crowd at the Fortune Friday party this weekend.
Oakland DJ and producer Solarz is holding his second Fortune Fridays party, spinning unabashedly populist Top 40 mashups, remixes and club hits for folks looking to get flossy before Christmas.

The 10 p.m. party at the posh Manor West in downtown San Francisco includes a dress code, bottle service and a fair amount of bootie-popping.

“The theme for this party is ‘Santa Claus’ Twerkshop,’” says Solarz, who, along with Guzie, makes up the Rock-It! Scientists DJ duo.

Twerking, the titillating, rump-vibrating dance move, he continues, “is all the rage and there’s a lot of good twerk remixes of popular songs.

“My set’s not afraid to go in any direction. My No. 1 goal is to please the crowd. If that means playing Miley all night long, I’ll happily do it. If that means playing Avicii all night long, I’ll happy do that.”

Born and raised in Berkeley and Oakland, Solarz DJ’d his first paid gigs in Boulder, Colo., where he got a degree in marketing.

He founded Rock-It! Scientists in 2001 in part to eliminate his biggest competition in the East Bay.

“We came together over competition,” he says. “We decided to just join forces and it was definitely a smart move.”

The duo has toured the world, including Asia, Canada, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. In 2013, Rock-It! Scientists stayed busy producing remixes for major artists.

The second Manor West “Fortune Fridays” came from the club management’s desire to highlight some of the Bay Area’s local DJ talent, Solarz says.

As a bonus, the club put in a much better sound system.

“When they first opened up it was garbage,” he says. “I look forward to playing there now.”

The downtown party on a Friday night draws a diverse mix of tourists and South of Market residents.

“It’s the kind of party where you could even go alone and end up making friends and having a good time. It’s trendy without being pretentious.”

He adds, “I’ve been noticing The City getting busier and I’m expecting it to be pretty busy this weekend. Kids are out of school, people are taking vacation and coming into town. Things are about to get pretty crazy.”
