Board of Supervisors President David Chiu introduced a resolution Tuesday urging The City to adopt a goal to have 20 percent of trips in the city done by bicycle by the year 2020. Several years ago, The City’s goal was 10 percent by 2010. Chiu said that San Francisco trips by bicycle are about 7 or 8 percent.
“I understand that a 20 percent goal may be a stretch goal. But it is something that has been accomplished in a number of cities in Europe and there are number of cities throughout the united states that are in front of us at this time,” Chiu said.
Chiu said that increased bicycle trips would improve people’s health, the environment and traffic flow.
The goal would be a guide for decision-makers as they are faced with development, Muni and budgetary decisions.
