White House Press Secretary Jay Carney declared Monday that President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner would "resolve all their differences" when the pair meets on the links June 18.
He was somewhat exaggerating.
"He likes and gets along with the Speaker of the House," Carney explained during Monday's briefing. "This is more of a social outing; they will not resolve the budget negotiations on the back nine."
Boehner has pressed the president to get more involved in negotiations over the debt limit, which Republicans say must include spending cuts to win their approval.
As for the more pressing matter — how many shots Boehner will spot Obama — the White House remains noncommittal.
Boehner is an accomplished golfer and Obama is, well, improving. Carney called the president's golf handicap "classified."
