Dems label AARP hearing a “witch hunt”

Rep. Pete Stark, D-Calif., on Friday said Republicans on the House Ways and Means were engaging in a “witch hunt” by holding a hearing on AARP.

“This is nothing more than a political witch hunt to punish an organization that spoke out in favor of health reform,” Stark said. “An organization that could stand in the way of their goal to privatize Social Security and end Medicare and turn senior citizens over to the mercy of the private health insurance industry.”

Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., followed up on Stark’s remarks by highlighting other tax exempt non-profit groups that were being spared the scrutiny of AARP, including Tea Party Patriots, American Crossroads GPS and one of the conservative alternatives to AARP, the 60-plus association.

“We have before us a single witness, a biased report, and the use of Committee resources to settle a score,” Lewis said. “This is nothing other than a political witch hunt.”

He continued, “I ask my colleagues who is next? Who else is on your list? My college? Your church? This is a dangerous game.”
