WHO: Paul Bergrin
WHAT: Prosecutor turned defense lawyer Paul Bergrin pleaded guilty to taking over a Manhattan, N.Y., brothel founded by one of his clients, but he won’t go to jail because of it. Instead, he was sentenced to time served, but remains behind bars awaiting trial on charges of arranging the killing of a witness, conspiracy and racketeering.
WHAT’S HAPPENING: Federal prosecutors say Bergrin, 53, routinely used threats, bribes and even murder to discourage witnesses from testifying against his clients. They allege he passed an informant’s name to associates of a drug dealer he represented. The informant was shot to death on a Newark, N.J., street in 2004.
