Daily Outrage: 46 Afghan soldiers desert Texas translation school

WHO: No fewer than 46 members of the Afghan military have taken off in recent years from the Defense Language Institute’s English Language Center at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. A peak of 21 trainees deserted in 2009.

WHERE THEY GO: It’s reported that five Afghan deserters are still at large. Eight are in custody. At least 18 are living in Canada and one has been granted conditional U.S. residency.

WHY IT’S OUTRAGEOUS: Military and police officials say it’s not unusual for foreign military personnel sent to the U.S. for training to go missing in search of a better life. But, the AWOL Afghan rate is much higher than for students from other countries.
