Bombardier Transportation says the order from BART is an option on a 2012 contract worth nearly $900 million for 410 railcars, the Plattsburgh Press-Republican reported.
All of the cars will be built at the company’s manufacturing plant in Plattsburgh, near the Canadian border.
The contract calls for 10 pilot cars to be delivered in spring 2015 for testing on the BART system. BART also secured five cars free of cost from the manufacturer.
The rest of the cars would be delivered between early 2017 and 2021.
By agreeing to buy the extra cars upfront, BART saves $125 million in the $1.789 billion contract, $596 million of which must come from the agency’s funds. The rest of the tab will be covered by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
Bombardier Transportation, a division of Montreal-based Bombardier, also has contracts with the transit authorities in Chicago and New York City.
