For John Deppmeier, an A.P. Giannini Middle School physical-education teacher, selling his brand-new house at 541 Missouri St. in San Francisco will bring a difficult three-year chapter of his life to a close.
In 2003, his 1907 bungalow burned down. He had purchased it in 1999 by selling off some stock. He lost everything in the fire. He coaches three sports, including co-ed track and girl’s basketball and softball; the worst was losing the basketball his very first team had signed for him, he said.
"We were city champs my first year," Deppmeier said.
He’s been having the place rebuilt for the 3½ years since, using insurance money and a construction loan. Somewhere along the way, it became a little bigger than a single man requires. Now, he hopes to sell the house, buy a smaller place for himself and stop "vagabonding"at friends’ homes.
The new house is very loft-like, Paragon Realtor Lisa Thompson said, with high ceilings, lots of windows and bright sunlight.
"It’s a nice open floor plan — the living, dining and kitchen areas are all open together," she said.
It also has views of the San Francisco Bay and the big ships that ply the waters, and is within walking distance to Potrero Hill shops, Thompson and Deppmeier said.
"It’s a fabulous lot," Deppmeier said. "I’m on a hill, the views are great, [and] the backyard’s gorgeous. It’s such a great neighborhood, too."
In addition to the living areas, the first floor also has one bedroom and a bath. The second floor has a master bedroom suite with a sunken tub and a separate shower, and a second bedroom with an en suite bath.
