Closest challengers hail from Denmark

Led by three-time defending champion Levi Leipheimer, Team RadioShack — captained by seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong — is shaping up to be the favorite at this year’s Amgen Tour of California, but a strong collection of talented teams should make for a wide-open competition.

The biggest challenge to RadioShack will likely come from Team Saxo Bank, based out of Denmark. Swiss powerhouse Fabian Cancellara, Belgian speedster Andy Schleck and Amgen Tour veteran Jens Voigt form a powerful trio of cyclists, each capable of capturing the Tour’s individual title.

British sprint specialist Mark Cavendish will lead a talented HTC-Columbia team, along with Australian Michael Rogers and American Tejay Van Garderen. BMC Racing, with American George Hincapie, and Garmin-Slipstream will also contend for the team title.
