Civilian electronics buyer charged in bribery scheme 

WHAT: Ralph Mariano, a senior systems engineer for the Naval Sea Systems Command — which makes up nearly one-fourth of the Navy’s entire budget — faces charges of taking $10 million in a bribery scheme involving inflated invoices and unperformed work.


HOW: Georgia-based Anjan Dutta-Gupta, whose ASFT company has $120 million in Navy contracts, is accused of funneling bribes via his subcontractors to Mariano and his relatives or associates in return for obtaining Navy contracts.


WHAT’S BEING DONE: Both suspects have been released on bail and are due in Providence, R.I., federal court next week.
