Newsom vetoes latest foot-patrol legislation

On Friday, Mayor Gavin Newsom vetoed foot patrol legislation that would add two more police district stations to a controversial new law approved by the Board of Supervisors last month requiring regular foot beats.

Newsom vetoed the first version of the legislation requiring regular foot beats in eight of The City’s 10 police districts, but his veto was overridden by the Board of Supervisors in a 9-2 vote. It takes eight votes to override a veto. The board is expected to vote on whether to override the most recent veto on Jan. 9.

In his veto letter, Newsom said he opposes the legislation because he does not believe the legislative branch should interfere with the operations of the Police Department.
