Board of Supervisors: ‘Clean construction’ law proposed by supervisor

Supervisor Sophie Maxwell wants construction to get cleaner. Before the board’s holiday break, Maxwell submitted a "clean construction ordinance" that would require city contractors to use more environmentally friendly methods and materials. The ordinance would also change the bid competition for city projects so that contractors are also judged based on their clean construction practices.

Bill would ban viewing of reporters’ phone records

Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval introduced legislation earlier this month that would prohibit the San Francisco Police Department from inspecting phone bills of city telephone lines used by reporters in the Hall of Justice.

Sandoval proposed the ordinance after learning that the Police Department reviewed the phone records of reporters after a news story that included information from an internal police memo came out in 2003 about Officer Alex Fagan Jr., the son of Alex Fagan Sr., who at the time was the department’s assistant chief. The department used the phone records in an attempt to figure out who leaked the memo to reporters, and later said it was entitled to do so since it pays for the phones.

Sandoval’s ordinance would halt the department’s practice of paying for the reporters’ phone system. The board is expected to vote on the ordinance early next year.

Muni

Deadline nears in Muni effectiveness survey

City residents have less than two weeks to sound off on the Muni transit system in an online survey.

As part of the Transit Effectiveness Project — a study aimed at overhauling Muni — residents are asked to fill out a 13-question survey and to submit any comments they might have on the transit system.

The survey is at www.sftep.com.
