After a reprieve for the holiday shopping season, construction work on Muni’s Central Subway project will resume today near Union Square.
For the past 1½ months, work has been halted on Stockton Street to allow for greater access to the many businesses on the thoroughfare. However, construction will resume as usual today, with Stockton Street being shuttered once more between Geary and Ellis streets to all automobiles except emergency vehicles.
The sidewalks on Stockton Street will remain open to pedestrians, but the walkways will be narrower due to the construction work.
Along with the Stockton Street closure, the westbound lane on Ellis Street between Stockton and the Ellis-O’Farrell Garage also will have the same vehicle limits.
Muni is advising riders that delays could occur on the 38-Geary and 38-Geary Limited bus lines as a result of the work.
The $1.6 billion Central Subway project will extend Muni’s underground Metro service from South of Market to Chinatown, with a new station being built at Union Square. The project is expected to be competed in 2019.
