Carjacker robs family before taking off in car

An evening drive turned into every parent’s nightmare Friday when a gun-toting thug forced a family of three from their car before taking off in the vehicle.

About 8:30 p.m., a 33-year-old man was driving with his wife and child in the Bayview district when he stopped at a red light at Armstrong Avenue and Keith Street, Officer Gordon Shyy said. An unknown man carrying a handgun ran toward the driver’s side door and ordered the three occupants out of the vehicle, according to Shyy.

The suspect then took the father’s wallet and cellphone at gunpoint before fleeing in the vehicle.

No arrest has been reported, but police recovered the vehicle at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Jamestown Avenue and Harney Way near Candlestick Park. It didn’t appear to be stripped of parts, though police weren’t sure of its condition prior to the incident, Shyy said.
