Can the New York Times count to three?

This little article on the politics of Arkansas is not bad as these things go. But it seems that New York Times reporter Campbell Robertson and his (her?) editors have trouble counting. “8 of its last 10 governors have been Democrats,” writes Robertson.

Here is a list of the last 10 governors of Arkansas, including the current incumbent, showing their party affiliation:

  1. Mike Beebe (D)
  2. Mike Huckabee (R)
  3. Jim Guy Tucker (D)
  4. Bill Clinton (D)
  5. Frank White (R)
  6. David Pryor (D)
  7. Dale Bumpers (D)
  8. Winthrop Rockefeller (R)
  9. Orval Faubus (D)
  10. Francis Cherry (D)

Did the Times forget Winthrop Rockefeller, whose family has some prominence in New York? Or Frank White, the Republican who beat the 34-year-old Bill Clinton (wife: Hillary Rodham) in 1980 and then lost to Clinton (wife: Hillary Rodham Clinton) in 1982? Or Mike Huckabee, who does his weekend Fox show from New York, a few blocks from New York Times headquarters? It’s hard for me to understand how any politically knowledgeable reporter would not know about all three of these Republicans. But, hey, even the best of us make mistakes—so let’s not be too hard on Campbell Robertson.
