Cal looks to start season with victory over UC Davis

During the Jeff Tedford era, the Cal football team often entered the season with lofty expectations.

In Tedford’s eight previous seasons coaching the Bears, the team was ranked in the preseason Top 25 six times.

However, 2010 is a different story as Cal is flying under the national radar.

The Bears open their season Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest against UC Davis at Memorial Stadium, and it will be the first chance for the Bears to show the rest of the country what they are overlooking. Cal has won five of its past six season openers.

The Bears return 19 players who started at least five games a year ago with four of them — punter Brian Anger, tight end Anthony Miller, linebacker Mike Mohamed and quarterback Kevin Riley — earning preseason All-America recognition.

Running back Shane Vereen is poised to have a breakout season with Jahvid Best now with the Detroit Lions in the NFL.

Cal has beaten Davis all eight times they have previously played, though the last meeting came in 1939. This is the final season at Memorial Stadium before it undergoes a major overhaul.
