Cable Car Bell Ringing contest held today in Union Square

That familiar San Francisco sound of cable car bells ringing out in the air will be heard loud and clear this afternoon in Union Square.

For the 48th straight year, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will hold its Cable Car Bell Ringing Contest, a competition that allows Muni conductors a chance to show off their long-practiced noisemaking techniques.

The contest will take place at noon in Union Square. Whoever rings their bell the sweetest will be awarded Muni’s coveted Grand Prize Bell.

“The Cable Car Bell Ringing contest is a great San Francisco tradition,” said Mayor Gavin Newsom. “The cable cars are National Landmarks that allow residents and visitors alike to experience the best of our city.”
