After the 5 p.m. deadline Friday to file to run for mayor, a total of 16 candidates were in the running, down from an initial list of about 35. One last minute surprise entry, other than Public Defender Jeff Adachi, was taxi cab driver Emil Lawrence, who is none too happy about how The City is regulating the cab industry.
Lawrence regularly attends Board of Supervisors meetings to express his dissatisfaction on the city’s treatment of cab drivers and other shortcomings of city government during the public comment period.
To qualify for the ballot candidates can either collect 10,096 signatures , or collect 20 signatures and pay a fee of $5,048. Lawrence paid the fee.
