Bus hits man crossing street

A 63-year-old man sustained a broken leg when he was hit by a 47-Van Ness bus Saturday afternoon, the 42nd time a pedestrian has been struck by a Muni vehicle this year.

The bus and the man both had a green light on South Van Ness Avenue at Mission Street around 4 p.m., but the bus was turning left onto Mission Street while the man was crossing it, police said.

He was taken to a hospital with injuries, including the broken leg. He’s in stable condition.

The bus was taken out of service, per normal procedure. The driver is still working, but has been placed on nondriving status.

Last year, there were 65 incidents with Muni and pedestrians. In 2007, there were 64, and there were 50 in 2006, according to Muni.
