Shaan Franchi, a 15-year-old student at Burlingame High School, is the founder and editor of www.goldenbearlair.com, a blog that gives daily updates about Cal athletics. The site reached a milestone this month when it recorded 1,000 visitors in a single day.

What prompted you to start this website? I’m a huge sports fan, and my favorite team has always been the Cal Bears. And instead of wasting time, I wanted to be productive. And I wanted a future in business, so I thought that developing a website about Cal sports would be the best way to accomplish all those goals.

Have you enjoyed any cool perks since you started the site? I was invited to Cal football’s last home game at AT&T Park. Me and three writers that contribute to the site got to participate in a pregame field visit, and we covered the whole game from a luxury suite. It was a pretty amazing experience.

How much time do you spend contributing to the site? On a weekday, I spend about an hour or two after school, and on the weekends, I spend about three or four hours each day. ... I’ve still managed to get straight A’s at Burlingame.
