A 14-year-old boy who was severely beaten at a park in downtown San Jose last week died Monday, police and school officials said.

Police responded to a report of a fight at Roosevelt Park on Friday evening. Officers found San Jose resident Heriberto Reyes, an eighth-grader at Bernal Intermediate School, seriously wounded, police said. The other people involved in the fight had fled the scene.

Investigators believe the fight was gang-related.

The boy’s father was elsewhere in the park at the time of the attack, police Officer Jose Garcia said Thursday.

Oak Grove School District Superintendent Tony Garcia said Reyes had attended Stipe Elementary School, which is also in the Oak Grove district, and had briefly been enrolled at Davis Intermediate School before switching to Bernal.
