Book has new take on Matthew Shepard

A journalist has a book out that says the horrifying death of Matthew Shepard was not a gay hate crime.

According to the New York Post, Stephen Jimenez's "The Book of Matt: Hidden Truths About the Murder of Matthew Shepard" reveals the murder was connected to drugs.

Citing 13 years of research and interviews with more than 100 people, including the men incarcerated for the crime, the book says, "Shepard had likely agreed to trade methamphetamines for sex. And it killed him."

The book also says the killers weren't strangers to Shepard, and that one had been Shepard's lover.

Jimenez is telling the story because, he says, "As a gay man, I felt it was a moral thing to do."
