The CEO and founder of Decker Communications, a San Francisco-based communications firm dedicated to teaching everyday people to company executives sound communications skills, recently released the firm’s 16th annual Top 10 Best and Worst Communicators list. For details, visit

I see Steve Jobs at No. 1 and Lady Gaga at No. 6. Any explanation? Steve Jobs — that’s a no-brainer. He has been on the best list before, but this is the last time he can be on it. But he is probably the communicator of the decade. ... Lady Gaga — those who ask “Why is she on the list?” particularly are people who don’t have a clue about her fame and ability as a creative icon in the music business. There are a lot of entertainers out there who are outrageous as she is, but none who are as poised and as articulate in an interview.

President Barack Obama was on the best list in 2008 and now ranks 10th on the worst. What happened? He’s been on a steady decline, communications-wise. We try to keep politics out of it, but in the case of Obama, he was the best because he was great at rhetorical advocacy. He is no Ronald Reagan as a communicator.
